History

I first saw this quilt on the cover of a book, Applique Mastery by Philippa Naylor. It hadn't yet been in circulation but as soon as I saw this book cover I wanted to make this quilt. The entire book is devoted to this quilt. The process, patterns, techniques and other ways of making this quilt unique. I used different colours to Philippa. With a white background, I used the favourite colours of mine. Oranges, blues, hints of green and yellow. The quilt is predominately applique and took approximately 7 months to apply all the shapes. This was done in stages starting from the middle and working my way out. Most of the pieces were free motion stitched on. A small number of shapes were machine blanket stitched on. The quilting was done on my Handi Quilter Avante and all hand guided. The quilting process took approximately 16 hours. This doesn't include the marking of where I will quilt, the loading of the quilt onto the frame or the binding. The binding was done a little differently to Philippa's. I included a scallop border. This quilt was entered into the Western Australian Quilters Association QuiltWest Craft & Quilt Fair in May 2017. It had the honour of winning 1st Mainly Applique: Professional; Best Long Arm Machine Quilting-Custom and Best Of Show 2017.
